Astringent causes shrinkage of mucous membranes or exposed tissues. It may internally apply astringent (checks discharge of blood serum or mucous secretions caused by a sore throat or diarrhea) or externally applied astringent (on cuts, allergies, fungal infection, scars or insect bites). It also helps to heal stretch marks and other scars.

An astringent improve the circulation to skin tissues and cause them to tighten, control surface oil and lower the skin's pH after cleansing.

Cutch (extract) is astringent, cooling, and digestive. It is useful in cough, diarrhea, ulcers, boils and eruptions of the skin. Decoction of bark is given internally in case of leprosy.
