Uses : Roots are sweet, sour, bitter, refrigerant, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, haemopoictic, hepatoprotective and tonic. It is useful in inflammations, hyperdipsia, strangury, jaundice and vesical calculi. It is also used in flatulence and dysentery. Leaves are haemopoictic, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antidiabetic, stomachic, ophthalmic, diuretic and liver tonic. It is used in hepatic obstruction, jaundice, arthritis, rheumatism and diseases of urinogenital tract. It is useful in flatulence and other stomach related diseases. It is useful in anemia and for treating blood diseases. It is used to lower the blood sugar level. Seeds are gelatinous, febrifuge, rejuvenating and nervine tonic. It is used in burning sensation, fever and headaches. It is also used in diarrhoea and dysentery. A paste of the seeds mixed with buttermilk or whey, is given for diarrhoea. A decoction of the roots is used as a diuretic and to treat rheumatism, gonorrhoea, and other diseases of the genito-urinary tract, jaundice and anasarca.

Chemical Constituents and Components : Main chemical components are vasicine, 2'-hydroxy -4-glucosyloxychalcone, vasicol, adhatodine, vasicinone, vasicinol, arachidic, cerotic, behenic, lignoceric, linoleic and oleic acids.

Action :
Vasicine:
1. Vasicine stimulates the respiratory system.
2. It induces bronchodilation and relaxes the tracheal muscles.
3. It provides significant protection against histamine-induced bronchospasm.
4. It reduces the elasticity and viscosity of tracheal mucus.
5. Vasicine also exhibits moderate hypotensive activity and cardiac-depressant effect.
6. It also shows anti-oxidation and hyaluronidase inhibiting activities, with improved moisture holding property.

Alkaloids:
1. It shows both bronchodilatory and bronchoconstrictor activity.
2. It stimulates the respiratory system.
3. It shows a potent anti-inflammatory effect.
4. It possesses abortifacient activities.
Curing Diseases:1. The plant is used extensively for treating cold, cough, chronic bronchitis and asthma.
2. It can be used as expectorant and antispasmodic.
3. It is found to relieve asthma and nervous disability.
4. It is used in diarrhea and dysentery.
5. It is useful in hemoptysis and rheumatic pains.

Research Information: Extract of Adhatoda vasica shows potent antitussive effect. Studies show it is very helpful to control a cough and intravenously it was 1/20-1/40 on mechanically and electrically induced coughing. (Ref.
